Change for the Better

It’s weird. I knew I wanted to start a new blog. I thought and thought about the content. Contrary to type, I even wrote out a plan with themes for the whole year. I wrote three, maybe four posts and then I got bored. I bored myself.

So now I’ve changed the name and the focus once again. Welcome to Better.

What I’ve been thinking about is the process of self-improvement. Sure, I’m an artsy-craftsy person, but that doesn’t capture all I want to do here. I want to be a better person, a better citizen, a better cook, a better seamstress, writer, reader have a better body, get better at my job. What do we do to get better? I’m not exactly certain.

So let’s try this, shall we?

No promises. It may take me a while to land on the right focus if this isn’t it, but I’ll keep trying.

ETA: On April 20, 2015 I consolidated my blogs, Bean Around the Block and Better. In the future I will eventually include my (very) old blog, Make Me.

What is Bean Around the Block?

It’s a blog of sorts, a magazine of sorts. My goal is create a site that celebrates my love of all things bright, colorful, inspiring and creative. I want Bean Around the Block to be a stopping post for people who like to make things, those looking for new ideas and those who just like a zen hit of color and pop.

What’s Up With the Name?

My attempt at establishing a brand, I guess. I do have a couple of Etsy stores, Lazy Lima Bean and Has Bean. Thought I’d keep with the Bean theme. The name comes from something my grandmother said. If she’d been sitting around all day, she would say she’d been a lazy lima bean. I thought it was cute and when it came time to come up with a name for the shop, it was a natural pick.

Who Am I?

My name is Hilari Ford. I used to write for Expression magazine which was just about the best job at the best magazine ever. I had a blog for 6 or so years called Make Me that was a great ride while it lasted. But what I want to do now is expand upon the blog format and make it more magazine-like. I think my favorite form of creative expression is a good tie between dance and paper arts. I don’t take dance classes but I love the freedom and meditative state it can put you in. I really enjoy working with paper – making it, stamping it, collaging with it, making books. It’s my goal to do that a lot more this year and here on the site. I also knit, bead, crochet and sew. Some days I think it would be great to narrow things down, but for the most part I like that I’m into so many different things – it keeps everything fresh.

This site is developing rather organically. It’s kind of the way I do things. I jump first, look last. I’ve done some planning, however on what I plan to do here for the coming year. I also hope to have my ridiculously creative friend Kathie hop on for the journey.

What’s Coming?

Interesting question. I can tell you the plans I have now, but I guarantee you that in 6 months the plans will have changed. I want to use this forum for interviews, tutorials, videos, shopping finds, book/movie/theater reviews as well as guidance and self-exploration. I tried to do this with my blog, but the format wasn’t exactly conducive. Here’s hoping, eh?

This is the first post as we find our way and tweak bits here and there on our way to the perfect site. Look out for some regular changes until we get there.
